Dr. Dipesh Mistry Sheds Light on Sleep Apnoea and Alzheimer’s Risk in the Daily Mail

We are proud to announce that Dr Dipesh Mistry has been featured in the Daily Mail for his expert insights on sleep apnoea and its impact on brain health. Dr Mistry highlighted the potential cognitive risks associated with this common yet often overlooked condition.

“Intermittent oxygen starvation stresses the brain, damaging blood vessels and potentially contributing to cognitive decline,” explains Dr. Mistry. He also pointed out how sleep disruption interferes with the brain’s waste disposal system, known as the glymphatic system, which helps clear toxins and amyloid proteins linked to Alzheimer’s disease.

Dr. Mistry referenced a significant 2022 Korean study that followed 1,110 volunteers over four years, showing a marked decline in memory, concentration, and cognitive skills in those with untreated, persistent sleep apnoea. His advice: “If you consistently wake up feeling tired, consult your GP for diagnostic tests or seek help from a sleep specialist.”

For those diagnosed, effective treatments range from lifestyle changes such as weight loss to using a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) device, which helps keep airways open and promotes better sleep.
